Johannesburg, The National Office of the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO), in partnership with Toyota South Africa Motors, have re-activated a collaborative road-safety initiative aimed at strengthening compliance and promoting responsible driving behavior across the country’s busiest taxi ranks and national roads.
As part of this partnership, Toyota South Africa has temporarily provided a fleet of five monitoring and compliance vehicles, which will support Hlokomela Road Safety operations during the peak travel period.
On Tuesday, 09 December, a formal handover ceremony took place at Toyota’s office in Sandton, where representatives from both organizations reaffirmed their joint commitment
to safer roads. The vehicles will be used between December 2025 and January 2026, focusing on road-safety education, on-site vehicle roadworthy checks, documentation compliance for both drivers and vehicles, seat-belt enforcement, and fatigue-management awareness.
Speaking at the ceremony, SANTACO ‘s National Hlokomela Head Bafana Magagula said: “The Hlokomela Road Safety campaign is about saving lives, restoring discipline on our roads, and strengthening the accountability that the taxi industry owes to the South African public.
This partnership with Toyota South Africa gives us the tools to be visible, responsive, and impactful during the busiest travel season” said Magagula.
Both organizations emphasize that the campaign goes beyond enforcement; it aims to build a culture of care within the transport industry.
“Road safety is not an event, it’s a continuous responsibility,” noted Magagula. He further said “We encourage drivers to rest, secure their vehicles, and ensure that all documentation is up to date. These actions save lives.”
Brent Mc Donald, General Manager: Vehicle Sales at Toyota South Africa says his company is proud to be associated with the taxi industry as it deserves the support the vehicle manufacturer has given though various initiatives implemented over the years “to empower the taxi industry including through training and promoting road safety campaigns”.
Toyota Vehicles such as the Quantum Bus, Hiace Sesfikile and Coasters are among the most prominently used vehicles by the taxi industry for commuting services.
