Santaco president, Abner Tsebe, has said that the collapse of Rea Vaya bus company would be a total disaster for the taxi industry and has called for it to be saved.
“We have noted with concern the events unfolding with the Rea Vaya BRT. This is an empowerment transaction that we should all ensure that it succeeds for the empowerment of the taxi industry,” he said.
He said Rea Vaya should serve as a beacon of hope for the taxi industry to participate in the mainstream economy. “A lot of people have been looking at the BRT bus system as an opportunity to empower taxi industry in terms of ownership of buses,” Tsebe added.
“The appointment of the Business Rescue Practitioner (BRP) is a welcomed move as his role is to ensure that the Rea Vaya is nursed back to commercial viability.”
He said that his role as a president of Santaco was and is always to ensure that he implemented all resolutions taken by the taxi industry.
“When I was elected my role was clearly defined as a president, which is that of an implementer of the taxi industry’s policies and resolutions, to make the taxi industry successful. My predecessors had laid a solid foundation to take Santaco forward,” Tsebe said.
He challenged taxi operators to judge him based on his performance and his delivery score card once his tenure ends as per the mandate the industry gave him when elected last year.
“My performance targets are based on the expected achievements of what has already been agreed upon by the taxi industry’s structures. For example, the taxi industry Lekgotla resolutions, and other programme that had been agreed to advance the interests of the taxi operators in general,” he said.
